Three SEFaS staff members were working at Uganda for a month
12 May 2011 - From January 15th to February 10th, 2011,
three members of the SEFaS staff (Ignasi Marco, Javier Millán and Andrea Chirife), toghether with the veterinarian Jesús Muro (
Departament d’Agricultura, Govern d’Andorra) and the vet student Vicky Ticó, developed different research and collaboration labours at Uganda. They sterilized, dewormed and vaccinated dogs against rabies, and also dewormed livestock in three areas of Uganda: the Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (the two latter host some of the last populations of mountain gorilla). Altoghether, about 250 dogs were treated, 35 of them were also esterilized, and about 7000 cows, lambs, goats and pigs belonging to about 600 owners were dewormed.
Also, blood samples from a representative number of animals were obtained in order to carry out a sanitary survey of these animals. The diseases carried by these animals are not only important for the dogs and livestock themselves, but also for the humans and wildlife inhabiting the sampled National Parks. These works were carried out in collaboration with two local NGOs:
Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH) and the Mgahinga Community Development Organisation (MCDO), funded by the Andorra Government and by SEFaS, and with the support of Intervet
Schering Plough, Laboratorios Ovejero, Prosan Lleida and Ingenasa.
