Alexander Genoy-Puerto (USP-Brasil) is making a stay at the Wildlife Health Research Group

27 July 2010. Alexander Genoy-Puerto is DVM by the Universidad de La Salle at Bogotá (Colombia), and he is currently doing his PhD at the Departamento de Patologia of the Universidade de São Paulo (USP, Brasil). During his stay at our research group he will received specialized formation on Pathology Diagnostic in wildlife. His stay at the Wildlife Health Research Group is the first exchange in collaboration with the Laboratório de Patologia Comparada de Animais Selvagens of the Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia de la Universidade de São Paulo.

The Wildlife Health Research Group participates in the conference: Collaborative working in research. Food health results

 25 June 2010 – On 2nd July next, the conference Collaborative working in research. Food health results will take place at the Degree Hall of the Veterinary School of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. The results of several researches conducted on different aspects of food health, carried out in collaboration between the Agència de Protecció de la Salut and several research centres, including the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, will be presented at this conference. The Wildlife Health Research Group will participate by communicating the study "Trichinella spp. infestation in red foxes captured in Catalonia between 1998 and 2007"

 

 

  

  

Alejandro Bertó (EBD-CSIC) will make a stay at the Wildlife Health Research Group

10 June 2010 – Alejandro is DVM by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and he currently has a PhD grant of the Junta de Ampliación de Estudios-CSIC, at the Estación Biológica de Doñana, at Seville. During his stay at our research group, he will design several experiments to study the importance of coinfection in the dynamics of some viral diseases of wild rabbits. Letter published at "Veterinary Record"

3 June 2010 - The journal "Veterinary Record" publishes the letter entitled "Absence of TB in Iberian ibex (Capra pyrenaica) in a high-risk area", from the authors Gregorio Mentaberre, Emmanuel Serrano, Roser Velarde, Ignasi Marco, Santiago Lavín, Ana Mateos, Lucía de Juan, Lucas Domínguez, Xavier Olivé and Jordi Romeva.

Drs. José Luiz Catao-Dias and Vania Maria de Carvalho, from Sao Paulo (Brasil), have visited our research group

20 May 2010 – Dr. José Luiz Catăo-Dias teaches Patologia Comparada at the Departamento de Patologia of the Laboratório de Patologia Comparada de Animais Selvagens of the Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia of the Universidade de São Paulo. Dr. Vania Maria de Carvalho teaches infectious diseases of both domestic and wild animals at the Instituto de Ciências da Saúde of the Laboratório de Biologia Molecular e Celular of the Universidade Paulista. Their research lines are very similar to those of our research group, and there is the chance to establish a collaboration both for research and for teaching.

  

  

  

Teresa Sánchez (Universidad de Murcia) will make a stay at the Wildlife Health Research Group

14 May 2010 - Teresa is a Veterinary student at the Universidad de Murcia and she collaborates with the Departamento de Sanidad Animal. During the stay at our research group she will explore the effect of landscape on the co-occurence of several pathogens in a roe deer population. This research is carried out in collaboration with the infectious diseases Area of the Universidad de Murcia (Dr. Mónica González Candela) and the Population Ecology team of the CEFS - INRA (Drs. A. J. M. Hewison and Hélène Verheyden). Welcome, Teresa!

Dr. Paul Cross will visit our research group 

11 February 2010 - Paul Cross (Rocky Mountain Science Center, University Way, Bozeman, Montana, US) will visit our research group next March 2010. Dr. Paul Cross's research combines field work and statistical modelling to study the effect of behaviour and population structure in wildlife diseases dynamics. After finishing his studies at the University of California, Berkeley, Paul has been involved in the supervision of an ambitious project in Africa on tuberculosis of African buffalo. Currently, his lab studies the ecology of Brucellosis in deer and bison in Yellowstone, as well as chronic wasting diseases in deer. Meeting of researchers of the Parc Natural de Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac

November 2009 - On November 19th a communication on wild boar population estimation was presented at the Wildlife Refuge Les Refardes - La Vall, located at the Parc Natural de Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac.

The southern chamois populations affected by a pestivirus epidemics continue recovering

September 2009 - According to a communication published at the website of the Departament de Medi Ambient i Habitatge (DMAH), the populations of southern chamois affected by a pestivirus at the Pyrenees continue recovering. The results of the census carried out by the DMAH indicate that population numbers are stabilizing and they even show a slight increase (Picture: Richard Martin/DMAH)

Nou article sobre el Pestivirus de l’isard a "Emerging Infectious Diseases"

Març 2009 - En la revista “Emerging Infectious Diseases” apareix un article sobre els dos importants brots de malaltia associats al Pestivirus (Virus de la Malaltia de la Frontera) de l’isard que van tenir lloc a les Reserves Nacionals de Caça de la Cerdanya-Alt Urgell i Cadí.

Nova monografia disponible

Febrer 2009 - Ja es troba disponible a l'apartat Monogràfics un nou article que tracta sobre el senglar i la seva interacció amb el medi urbà. En aquest treball volem donar a conèixer tota la problemàtica associada a la presència del senglar en zones urbanes i periurbanes, així com les possibles solucions que s'hi poden aplicar.

Reintroducció de cabirols als Ports de Tortosa i Beseit

Novembre 2008 - Els passats dies 17 i 18 de novembre es van capturar a la Reserva de Caça de l’Alt Pallars-Aran dos cabirols destinats a un projecte de reintroducció de l’espècie a la Reserva Nacional de Caça dels Ports de Tortosa i Beseit. El Servei d’Ecopatologia de Fauna Salvatge (SEFaS) va col·laborar en aquestes captures i va dur a terme el maneig dels animals, així com el seu control sanitari i de benestar.

Premi a la millor presentació com a pòster al 7è Simposium sobre Pestivirus de la Societat Europea de Virologia Veterinària

Setembre 2008 - Durant els dies 16 i 19 es va celebrar a Uppsala (Suècia) el 7è Simposium sobre Pestivirus de la Societat Europea de Virologia Veterinària. Un dels tres premis a les millors presentacions en format de pòster es va concedir al nostre treball titulat: “Border Disease Virus infection in Southern chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica) in the Pyrenees (Catalonia, NE Spain)”.

Buit sanitari de vaques i senglars al barranc de Lloret (Ports de Tortosa i Beseit)

Juliol 2008 - Gairebé 4 anys després del descobriment d'un focus de tuberculosi d'elevada prevalença a la població de senglar que habita al Barranc de Lloret dels Ports de Tortosa i Beseit, i després de demostrar-se insuficients altres mesures menys dràstiques per a l'eradicació de la malaltia, s' ha realitzat el buit sanitari de l'explotació de boví origen del focus i s'han iniciat les actuacions per eliminar temporalment la població de senglar de la zona.

Situació actual de la Pestivirosi de l'isard als Pirineus catalans

Juny 2008 - Des de l'any 2001, una malaltia associada a un Pestivirus (Virus de la Malaltia de la Frontera o “Border Disease Virus”) ha delmat les poblacions d'isard en tres grans epizoòties: la primera va aparèixer durant els anys 2001 i 2002, afectant la Reserva Nacional de Caça de l'Alt Pallars-Aran, als Pirineus de Lleida; la segona es va desenvolupar durant la primera meitat de l'any 2005 a la Reserva Nacional de Caça de la Cerdanya-Alt Urgell; i la tercera, des de mitjans de 2005 fins a finals de 2007 va afectar la Reserva Nacional de Caça i Parc Natural del Cadí-Moixeró.
